Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

Some time ago, short-drama apps stopped being a fringe curiosity. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category, with the US generating 49% of it. Full-year 2025 landed at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M. If you have ever searched a store for a short reels app, you have run into at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, Armand Procacci age My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they appear identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Below the surface, though, they differ on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and those differences change what you pay and where you can watch. Over six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

    The Big Head-to-Head Grid

The entire field sits on one screen here, before the rounds start. As of September 2026, the prices match the figures shown in the US App Store, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Media Partners Asia supplies the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. Each app’s Google Play listing supplies the install counts. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. Think of the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

    Round 1: Owners and Scale

ReelShort is the incumbent, and it still holds the most weight. MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. MPA also pegs 2025 revenue for the app at $785M and forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Released in April 2023 and holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. ReelShort led $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, per Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama, the minnow with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. Run from Hong Kong, ShortMax appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. Just outside this lineup, GoodShort holds, for context, about 6%. Round winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

    Round 2: What It Costs

In this round, the apps look more alike than anywhere else. In the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at around $19.99, and each one auto-renews. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, mark the different route DramaBox takes. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the smarter buy for steady watchers. Country, platform and promotion all change prices, so the number on your screen may be different. Winner: DramaWave, thanks to a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

On free viewing, the marketing gets loud and the details get thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. A seven-day check-in streak yields 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is via ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.

    Round 4: Screens and Platforms

Real differences show up on screens, where these apps really part ways. ReelShort streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices, and it also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app. The ShortMax domain redirects to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama has one for tvOS 18 or later, which is its trump card. If all you need is a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, but My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Libraries and Original Series

On raw numbers, ShortMax is untouchable. The app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages; as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly uses AI to generate more than 80% of its newly released content. On recognizable hits, ReelShort wins, with The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox answers with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Round winner: ShortMax, on pure volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

In this round, DramaWave runs away with it. Its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync ranks as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. The fine print is worth a look too, as it varies more than the prices do. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms state refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Round winner: DramaWave.

    Best For: The Final Verdict

No single short drama app takes every round, which means the right choice depends on how you watch. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. My Drama is best for Apple TV, since it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader, having been ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. Best for free, legitimate sampling is ReelShort again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
